Don't break the egg!

In Ian's lecture, we looked at Belbin and his theory on 'roles within a group'; such roles as team leader and co-ordinator. We did a questionnaire which made us answer what we would do in certain situations within a group. The answers matched us to certain roles, according to Belbin's theory; my highest scores put me as a team leader, monitor evaluator and completer finisher.

Ian assigned us a task to see if Belbin's theory was correct. We were given two balloons, two sheets of paper, a piece of string, cello-tape, a pair of scissors and a uncooked egg! Our job was to make something that would protect the egg from breaking when we threw it out the window. We had 20 minutes. Huseyin took the lead and came up with some really good ideas, whilst Hu took notes and made valuable sketches that made it easier for us to visualize. Then I came up with the idea that if we made sure that the egg was in the middle of the two balloons, nothing would hit the egg when thrown. We made another sketch to see if it would work and everybody agreed on that plan. As the boys were making, I was keeping a close eye on the time and a close eye on the egg (we nearly broke it before it even got to the window!).
Once we had the egg placed securely in the middle of the two balloons, we decided on wrapping padding around the whole thing, just for extra bounce.

Time was up! We just finished on time but we were really happy with the result. Hu was our thrower, when it was thrown it came down quicker than I thought it would of; I thought game over! Huseyin checked and our egg was not broken!

Looking back on Belbin's theory, I thought all of us related to it in some way, as Huseyin was 'team leader', he took charge and made sure everybody was happy. Hu was our 'plant', he came up with our creative diagrams and was there when to solve difficult problems. I was the 'completer finisher' as I was the one to push to get it finished on time. However, the main thing I noticed for myself was I was very competitive, even though it was just an egg!

Urban Projection

Trying to research for video urban landscape, I stumbled across this and I thought it was great. Set up by Up Projects, M-O-T-H are video graffiti artists who use wearable projector units so they can project anywhere and everywhere.

Picture taken form: http://severalbees.com/moth

In choosing this picture, was that in such hostile urban environment, light (projection) can make something look so beautiful and different. I feel this relates back to emotion, where projection changes the mind to think differently about something. Or moreover, the sense of ‘more than meets the eye’.
Maybe we could take a few photographs and maybe make a short video of hostile urban environments and project Hu’s ‘emotion’ animations on top to change the feeling of the image.

From the website above, I done a little more research on ‘M-O-T-H’ and the image above was from a series where the ‘M-O-T-H’ projectors went around projecting on different backgrounds.
These projectors (see video below) can change the mood of a building, make people laugh, look and be intrigued by images.

Projection Ideas - Single Projection

Huseyin Hamit

Below I have created a single projection within a boxed room and curtains on the front door to keep light out of the room whilst the projector is being played. This is a very basic idea of how I believe many people would expect to see a projected image within a room.

Tomorrow we will be experimenting with projectors to see what will work best for us and I will be updating these designs below on the computer.

Urban Landscape - Pictures & Abstract

Huseyin Hamit

In the last session Hu mentioned looking at urban landscapes/cityscapes in an abstract way as you will see from his posts on the blog and the video he has produced it creates a deeper understanding to what is trying to be said within his work in relation to the character within the animation created which can also be related to the viewer of the exhibition since when looking at something abstract it creates a sense of curiosity.

Below I have included some of my images in relation to an urban landscape which I think would be great to use as a background with the animation being within the foreground. I also believe that since Leanne works with film a recording of an urban landscape transitioning into a motionless image whilst the motion of the animation is within the foreground could relate to the sense of abstract mentality of how we may see and adapt to an urban landscape.

Original Images

Edited Black & White Abstract Style Images

As you can see below the images which I took above have been edited to almost look as if they are shapes rather than something structural such as a standard photograph like the ones above. This was done to create a sense of illusion since abstract does relate to what's in your mind certain shapes and forms created within your mind can become anything you want it to become.

For this particular Image only half of it was edited since I wanted to show the relation between something which looks or may seem real against something which you may see as an idea of a specific drawing which also relates to the animation side of Hu's work since a drawing is created within the mind and may not look exactly the same as the real thing would where as a picture does this much better even though it is also not exactly how the real view may be its still closer to the real thing.

Colour Experimentation

Below I have added certain colours to the images which were edited above since I believe this gives the image a more abstract like sense and since what Hu has been working on seems very colourful I believe these images as backgrounds could be of good use in relation to it all.

Emotion with abstract emotional graphic

Because I am a shaper , so I can easily do many abstract motion graphic like this in flash cs4.o.They are angry, enjoyable, boring and fun. These motion graphics may be used in the exhibition.

My idea for exhibition in animation part

I just edit my practice 1 whole works for a new one. But the theme is urban space , and urban crime. Each part contact with the mental landscape of the main character. It can be called "Urban Game". We can discuss how to use the animation as a background. because it can be just a abstract motion graphic looking style.--Hu

Video Installation - Spider Projection

Huseyin Hamit

As I have been searching online at projections and video installations I stumbled upon this particular video which was quite interesting. The video consists of a spider being recorded within a square box the sides and top of the box being glass which replicates a similar room that the video installation will be played in. As you will see from the video the way it is done is by recording something small but enlarging the recorded video and projecting it within a much larger room creating a very different effect since we know that spiders cannot be that large the size difference really makes a big impact on the viewer as if a very large spider is trying to escape which changes our perception of the spider and the space it is being projected within.

Bálint Rádóczy - Projection onto people

Huseyin Hamit

These series of images which I found whilst researching online stood out to me as a photographer since when I often think of projection I would useually think of projecting onto a flat surface that will create a strong view of the image/video being projected but there are many other ways in which projection can be looked at using various ideas such as the images below.

What interests me about these images was the fact that not only projection was used but also models by projecting directly onto the models and creating a unique visual look whilst having that sense of abstract and aesthetic feel about the image.

Created by projecting self-made graphics onto the model, this series is meant to provide an almost purely aesthetic approach to visuality whilst dealing with a subject that outlines the true nature of photography itself.

Tobias Bjorkgren - Research

Tobias Bjorkgren - Birds of Fall

While browsing through the internet I found some great images and an amazing photographer who uses projection within some of his work his name is Tobias Bjorkgren. The photographer is a portrait, fashion, advertising & editorial photographer based in stockholm his website is in swedish but it can be translated if you use google chrome if you would like to find out more about him.

Below is a behind the scenes video of his which I found I will also upload some of his images for you both to see.

The video above is from one of his projects called birds of fall where he interprets swedish birds with swedish fashion designers. The first model, Osannda as a pheasant and Julia who interprets an evening falcon.

Below I have included some of the images from his project for you to see they all seem very professional and the projection gives the images a feeling of the outdoors even though these were taken within a studio. Click images to see a larger view.

Some Other Projection Work - Research

After our projection task in class, I went home and did some research. I came across Robert Barry who’s done series of projection work. Unlike ours where we just had light and shadow; Barry uses the projector to project images, I think using the projector this way makes the works a lot more interesting. For me, from looking at the website, if I were to see these works in person; it would be like sitting in a dark, looking through a window to busts of colours and light. My favourite projection is number 3 (See website) as it reminds of the film Psycho, even though the image is colourful, its eerie because it’s like you are invading somebody’s privacy. I really like idea of the ‘window’, but instead of colour and beautiful fields, we could look out to something that’s not the ‘norm’, eg. Aliens, something scary?

Projection - Task 1 Continued

Huseyin Hamit

As Leanne has stated below whilst looking at different angles, surfaces, reflections and shadows we documented the whole process and came up with various ideas. You will see below that I have also included a few snapshot images of some of these processes and a few short videos.

Surface Reflection

Here I found a mirror which had a star shape symbol on its surface and thought it would be a good idea to use this as a reflective surface to reflect the light and also compare the star shape which was cut out on the car with the star shape on the actual surface as you will see on the first image.

Background & Light

On the way back to class we took a quick snapshot of the projector whilst including the background scenery  since the main designs on the projector were abstract we thought the sky and tree's would also seem similar. As the cars passed by I tried to take the image so that you can see the beams of light reflecting towards us whilst also taking the picture from an angle to be able to see the light within the projector.

Shadows, Highlights and Colour

Since we found a dark place to experiment with our projector it was very useful due to being able to seeing the lights reflection much clearer. Below I have include a picture and video of the Shadows and highlights we tried to experiment with using our projector and surfaces around it. You can also find the colour experimentation video below this post which Leanne has recorded and posted.

Task 1 - Projection!

After making our projection box, our next task was to see what different ways we could use our projection box to produce different angles, shapes and shadows. We all decided in finding the darkest place on campus to produce the best shadows.

Here is a picture of one of the results:

I thought the results were really good, where we had cut the shapes; the details were so clear on the wall. It almost reminded me of those child's light you get and hang on the ceiling.
Then we had a really good idea that we should add colour.

Here is a video with colour:

For me, doing this task, I want to explore shape and light more. Maybe with different backgrounds eg. a brick wall or leaves.  And I think sound would be really interesting to look at with the moving shapes.

Projection - Task 1

Huseyin Hamit

Throughout this project we will also be including small in class projects that we have done within class each of us will post a brief description of the projects whilst also including images and videos.

For our first in class project we were asked to create our own projector using very few pieces of equipment we firstly discussed as a group what we could do to make our projector unique to work in a different way. Hu came up with a great idea of creating a stencil cut out type projector which will project light from various different holes and would be cut out from the projector which was made out of card.

Whilst Huseyin was cutting out the shape of the projector which we decided to be rectangular since this was the first shape that came to mind Leanne and Hu discussed what types of shapes would be best to cut out on the projector itself brainstorming ideas we then eventually all agreed to create something which was abstract.

Our result to the created projector was this:

Introduction

Huseyin Hamit

This blog will include various research and documentation relating to our group project Media Practice 2. Our group consists of (Huseyin, Leanne & Hu) which all study different subjects.

Due to each of the people within the group having specific skill sets such as still photography, video/film, animation, art & design, this will allow the group to gain a greater understanding and greater knowledge to come up with various ideas using these skill sets whilst relating it to our project.
