Ian assigned us a task to see if Belbin's theory was correct. We were given two balloons, two sheets of paper, a piece of string, cello-tape, a pair of scissors and a uncooked egg! Our job was to make something that would protect the egg from breaking when we threw it out the window. We had 20 minutes. Huseyin took the lead and came up with some really good ideas, whilst Hu took notes and made valuable sketches that made it easier for us to visualize. Then I came up with the idea that if we made sure that the egg was in the middle of the two balloons, nothing would hit the egg when thrown. We made another sketch to see if it would work and everybody agreed on that plan. As the boys were making, I was keeping a close eye on the time and a close eye on the egg (we nearly broke it before it even got to the window!).
Once we had the egg placed securely in the middle of the two balloons, we decided on wrapping padding around the whole thing, just for extra bounce.
Time was up! We just finished on time but we were really happy with the result. Hu was our thrower, when it was thrown it came down quicker than I thought it would of; I thought game over! Huseyin checked and our egg was not broken!
Looking back on Belbin's theory, I thought all of us related to it in some way, as Huseyin was 'team leader', he took charge and made sure everybody was happy. Hu was our 'plant', he came up with our creative diagrams and was there when to solve difficult problems. I was the 'completer finisher' as I was the one to push to get it finished on time. However, the main thing I noticed for myself was I was very competitive, even though it was just an egg!
